Do you wish to learn how to set up an internet speed testing widget on your WordPress website? It’s a feature that can attract a lot of people to your site. Download and upload speeds have become points of worry in today’s world. For most, the fear is that their IPSs are not really living up to the promised speeds. That’s where network speed testing tools become necessary. The following is how to set up speed testing on your site;

Use Speedtest Custom

To get this done, we will be using a tool called Speedtest Custom. The tool was developed by Ookla, a company that specializes in the delivery of internet metrics to people around the world. Speedtest Custom is actually their most popular tool.

If you go any website that offers you the ability to check your internet speed, chances are high that they are using Speedtest Custom by Ookla. The great thing is that you can embed this tool on your own website completely free of charge.

To get started, you need to go to the Speedtest Custom Website. That’s where you will be creating and customizing the widget that we will embed on our website.

Create an Account

You will now need to create an account. Click on Register or Create Account. The registration process involves creating an Ookla account, so you will be taken to the Ookla website. The screenshot below shows steps in the registration process.

You will have to pick a plan. There are two plans. The first one is free, while the second costs $1995 per year.  For this example, we will be using the free plan. The major advantage of the paid plan is that you can run Speed tests from your own servers. But that’s probably not really important.

Log in

Once you have created your account, you will now be able to log in. In your Dashboard, you will see three options. There will be an option called Speedtest Servers. Then there will be an option called Speedtest Custom. Finally, there is an option called Speedtest Intelligence. We are interested in Speedtest Custom so click on Go to Custom.

Create Your Test

You will now be able to create your Test. During the process, you will have to do the following;

  • Create a Test URL. It will be something like;
  • You will also have to work on the interface for your button. That’s involves choosing a color for the Go button.
  • Choose which servers to use. For this example, we will use the Speedtest Server network. If you have gone for the paid plan, then you can pick your own servers. But the Speedtest Server network is extensive and spread across the globe.
  • Upload your logo as part of the process of customizing your speed testing tool.

Embed the code on your website

Finally, it will be time for you to embed the code for the widget that you have just created onto your website. You can embed the code onto any page.

We recently set up this widget on a WordPress website. It’s a site page designed to speed test Vodacom, Rain, Cell C, Telkom and MTN networks in South Africa. You can see what we are talking about by following the provided link.

What you may want to do is to set up a page that’s dedicated to testing internet speeds. That’s what we did. To do that, you can follow the instructions given here

It’s simple to do. You just need to replace the items in bold on the page with your company’s embed code. You will find your embed code in your account. Once you have created the changes, go to your WordPress and create a new Page.

Click on the three dots to the top right of your screen and choose Code Editor. Now you can paste the code into the space that’s provided. Exit Code editor and save your changes.

What does it look like?

Below is how the Speedtest page will look like. There will be a big Go button in the middle and, below that, the name of the server from which the test is being done. The system will automatically choose from nearby servers.

There are plenty of benefits to having this tool on your website. It’s a huge draw in terms of traffic. A lot of people are looking to test their internet speeds and if you can give them what they are looking for, you will definitely boost your website’s profile.

Most people now get their entertainment online. If you have ever encountered buffering while watching football, you will realize the importance of having such an important tool. From an SEO perspective, you can use this tool to reduce your bounce rate. Ask your readers to test their speed and many will do it willingly. You will easily be able to redirect them to your speed testing page.
